Adventures in Second Shooting

Stephanie Ford

March: I second shot a wedding where details were part of my role to capture. As the couple were getting ready in a hotel, there weren't a lot of options to set up details for photos. I shot a majority of the detail photos in the elevator as I liked the wood planking floor as a flatlay backdrop versus the distracting carpet in the hallway. Yes, I got some interesting looks as people saw me when the elevator door opened. Lol.

April: For this wedding, I arrived a little before the primary and upon seeing the venue knew that we would be looking for an alternative location for some portraits. I spent maybe 20 minutes circling the surrounding neighborhood looking for flowers, leafing trees, whatever I could find. Then, at a corner of a shopping mall 2 minutes from the ceremony site, there was a huge oak tree in a field off a highway and an old windmill in an adjacent field. Perfect! This allowed us to capture beautiful portraits for the couple without taking them too far from the venue and get a variety in one location.

July: This wedding had its own unique challenges as we - myself and the lead photographer - were meeting the bride and groom separately at a nearby park to do bridal party photos without them seeing each other. Then at the venue was a lighting disadvantage with windows on one side of the building and solid wall on the other. Meant being on my toes as I moved around during the ceremony - adjusting settings to accommodate switching from one direction to the other.
